• TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)

Measures competency in English when English is not your mother tongue.

It is primarily a multiple-choice test, in 4 parts: Listening, Structure, Reading, Writing (test of written English–TWE)

The results are reported in points.
Maximum: 300 points
Minimum: 40 points

Be aware that the scoring system changed in 1998, when computerized testing was introduced.

The maximum of 677 points on the paper-based test is converted to 300 points on the computerized test, and the minimum of 310 points converts to 40 points.

Date of exam: all year (It is possible to register by telephone, fax, mail, Internet.)

Official results: sent 2 weeks after the exam (preliminary results the same day)

Oral test: Test of Spoken English (TSE) measures the ability to communicate in English.

Tests given one time per month. Register 7 weeks in advance.

 

• IELTS (International English Language Testing System)

The IELTS evaluates if candidates are prepared to study in an English environment. It is the test most often used for studies in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.

As opposed to TOEFL, it is not a multiple-choice test.

It is composed of 4 modules: Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing

Results are reported two weeks after the exam.

• GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test)

The GMAT is an exam that measures basic verbal, math, and writing skills of applicants for graduate studies in business–usually a Master of Business Administration program.

The first part is the analytical writing assessment, consisting of two essays on given topics. This is followed by two sections of multiple-choice questions, first math, then verbal.

• For Australian universities, a minimum of 6.0 to 6.5 is required.

The GMAT is administered year-round on computer only.
