Created in 1985, the DELF (diplôme
d'études en langue française) and the DALF (diplôme
approfondi de langue française) are granted by the National
Ministry of Education and apply to the non-francophone public.
It certifies in an official manner the level
of knowledge, practice, and mastery of the French language. No
previous degree or title is required.
DELF first degree:
The first DELF degree certifies the ability
to communicate in French (written and oral) in current, real-life
situations.
It is composed of 4 units:
- General expression,
- Expression of ideas and feelings,
- Comprehension and written expression,
- Application of the functioning of the
language.
Each of these units corresponds to around
100 hours of practical learning.
DELF second degree:
The second DELF degree includes a general
knowledge of French-speaking civilization as well as the beginning
of specialized French. It is composed of 2 units: French civilization
and specialized expression.
These units correspond to a level of 500
to 600 hours of practical learning.
Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française:
DALF
The DALF certifies the capacity to effectively
follow a course of study in a French-speaking university. It is
composed of 4 units: written comprehension and expression, oral
comprehension, written comprehension and expression of specialized
French, oral comprehension and expression of specialized French.
Holders of the DALF are exempt from
language entrance exams at all French universities.

Diplomas of the Alliance française
There are five diplomas in general French:
- le Certificat d'étude de français
pratique 1er degré (CEFP1)
- le Certificat d'étude de français
pratique 2e degré (CEFP2)
- le Diplôme de langue de l'alliance
française (DL)
- le Diplôme supérieur d'études
françaises modernes (DS)
- le Diplôme des hautes études
françaises (DHEF)
- and one diploma of specialized French:
- le Diplôme supérieur d'études
commerciales (DSEC)
The written tests are conceived and corrected
in Paris.
The oral tests are evaluated on the spot.
The tests are administered by the Alliance
Française de Paris.
