 AUSTRIA

Programs designed for foreigners

Information and contacts:

In most Austrian higher education institutions there is an "international relations office" (Büro für Internationale Beziehungen) that will help you with all your questions related to studies in your chosen city. This office can also help you in the first few days to help you register for German language courses, for finding accommodation and to help you in looking for your classes. It is advised to contact the office before arriving to Austria.

Programs

In most Austrian universities it is possible to take German language courses 2 or 3 weeks before the beginning of each semester. Furthermore German language courses are offered to international students during the semester.

If you do not wish to take the German language courses most institutions also offer an introductory week to help you get used to your new environment. This introductory week enables you to get information on questions regarding registration, health insurance, accommodation ...

Specific programs are also offered: "International studies programs" and "Complementary studies programs" for international students (Ergänzungsstudien). These programs function in relation to the student exchange regulations, with one semester in a partner university and one semester in an Austrian university. These programs are well established in Austria and nearly all the establishments offer this program. Get information from your home university to see if there is an agreement with an Austrian university.

Finally, Austria, a member of the European Union since 1995, and participates in a number of European exchange programs such as Socrates/Erasmus, which enables students from EU countries to study in Austria by applying at their home university. This also allows the possibility of the courses that were taken in Austria to be validated with the standard of their country. Erasmus/Socrates students pay their registration fees at their home university.
