Health insurance
There are many options:
You can keep the health insurance of your country if it covers
the Austrian medical fees. In this case, you will be reimbursed,
this means that your budget will be fairly flexible.
The best option is to register with the Austrian medical insurance
plan (Krankenversicherung). For students from the USA,
this insurance is offered at 244,80 ATS (US $14.70) per month
including dental and optician fees. If there is a bilateral agreement
between your country and Austria, you can pay 489,60 ATS (US $29.40)
per month. The health care is free with the exception of administrative
fees of 50 ATS (US $3) per quarter, these fees prove that you
are registered with the medical plan which will be taken care
of by the social security - and is to be presented at your first
medical visit. Prescriptions are 45 ATS (US $2.70). It is wise
to contact your university in Austria and inform them that you
would like to benefit from the Austrian health insurance plan
so that they can send you the necessary registration documents.
For EU citizens, your national health insurance plan can be used
in Austria, all you need is the E-128 form that you can get in
your country.
Once you are covered by one of these insurance plans, you can
choose whichever practitioner, general or specialist or you can
go to the hospital (there are also health care centres in the
universities).
