 AUSTRIA

Traveling information

Austria is situated in the center of Europe and is a bridgehead to the capitals of its neighbouring countries, so take advantage of your stay and take small trips to Prague, Budapest, Munich or even the large cities in the north of Italy. If you prefer the rural walks, the Austrian and Swiss mountains and the forests of Slovakia will enchant you.

The train is the most practical means of transportation for travels within Austria: it is efficient, fast and at a relatively good price. For more information, you can consult the website of the national railway company: Österreichische Bundesbahnen, ÖBB. With your student card and an identity photograph, at the train stations of the ÖBB you can buy the Vorteilscard for students (a discount card for rail travels in Austria, that costs around 250 ATS (U $15) per semester). Students who are registered at university and who are older than 27 years old at the beginning of the university year have the right to a reduction of 50% on normal train travels with this card.

By road one can have access to all the bordering countries and the road system is of a good quality. There are national flights between the big cities of Austria. Vienna has the biggest airport in the country for international connections. Linz, Graz, Salzburg, Innsbruck and Klagenfurt also have international airports. The airport in Munich is only a few hours away from the majority of Austrian cities, so this can also be an option if there are not enough international flights between Vienna and your country.

Finally, amongst these modern and fast means of transportation, one must not forget the Danube which starts in the Black Forest in Germany and exits into the Black Sea, and is one of the oldest communication cross-roads of Europe. Today there are marvellous boat trips that start in Vienna or Linz and travel throughout central Europe.
