Health insurance
All students must join a medical insurance plan. Having
medical insurance is a prerequisite to be able to 'register'
at a German university. If the applicant has a similar medical
insurance from their country then that insurance might be
recognized in Germany.
Applicants from the EU can, for a temporary stay that does
not exceed 12 months, benefit from their medical insurance
of their country. A claim of a medical insurance plan must
be done by filing out either the E109 form or the E111 form.
These forms can be found at the medical insurance offices
in your country. They are generally recognized by other
medical insurance offices which then isssue a certificate
of insurance (Versicherungsbestatigung) for the University.
Students who do not have a sufficient medical insurance must then
register at a German medical insurance office. The monthly fee
is around 93 DM (around US$ 42,70). You can apply at any medical
insurance office.
Exceptions:
Students registered in the Studienkolleg, students enrolled
in German language courses (DaF) and students over the age
of 30 are not obliged or authorised to follow the requirements
mentioned above.
For more information contact the International Relations
Office (Akademisches Auslandsamt). With medical insurance
coverage, the student benefits from free medical care in
most cases and because of the new system, you do not need
to pay in advance.
