Finding accomodation

As always the AAA (Akademisches Auslandsamt) can help. They can show you the small advertisements for private accommodation, or inform you of the necessary steps that are needed if you are looking for a room in the university residences.
University accommodation is especially emphasized in Germany, because they are the center of student life. Sometimes more so than the campus. The bedrooms that are offered can be either small, private bedrooms equipped with a small kitchen and toilet, or a house or a floor of a building with many bedrooms, a kitchen and bathroom shared between 5 or 6 students (Wohngemeinschaft). Student residences are also equipped with other necessities such as a recreation room for having parties, a library, the university restaurant, the bar, the chapel...
The university residencies have a nice ambiance, but there is also an acknowledged respect for studying: silence is strictly respected and observed by all, so that students can study. The cost for renting a room in the university residency is relatively cheap (compared to the cost of renting private accommodation). University residency sounds great but there is a down side: it is very hard to get a place and you should apply well in advance in the hope of getting accomodation. So contact the AAA as soon as possible.
