Finding a job
To
get an internship with a German company is very common,
especially in the Fachhochschulen. You can ask your professor
for direct contacts.
In the university, you can find jobs within the Studenthifskraft
and you can work for a maximum of 80 hours per month in
one of the university laboratories. This job is mainly intended
for science students.
The studentische Hilfskraft of the university or the Arbeitsamt,
which ever is the closest, can also have interesting job offers.
BE CAREFUL, THE WORK LAWS ARE STRICT IN GERMANY: a professional
job is possible under the conditions stated in the labor law involving
work permits (AEVO). You can only work for a maximum of 3 months
or 90 days per year with out a work permit, while you are a registered
student at the Fachhochschule. A professional job can also be
possible during the semesters or holiday months. It is not possible
to equate 90 days work in terms of work hours.
A job measured in hours is only possible with a work permit
and can only permit a maximum of 10 hours per week, this
means a maximum of 520 hours during the year.
For a full time job during the semester, you will need a
certificate from the Fachhochschule stating that your job
does not interrupt your schedule at the Fachhochschule and
does not interrupt your studies. Because the job is in relation
to your studies, such interruptions do not really happen.
To get a professional, full time job, you must first have
complete authorization to take the job by the administration
concerned, before you can get a work permit by the job agency.
Students that are citizens of the European Union and some
other countries (Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein) do
not need a work permit.
Students who are nationals of the following countries have
an easier chance of getting a work permit at the job agency
of the region: Australia, Israel, Japan, Canada, New Zealand,
Switzerland, and the United States.
The salary of a student is not taxed and you could probably
get a salary of about 10 to 15 DM (5 to 7 $US) per hour.
