Population

Hong Kong has 6.5 million people almost 96% Chinese.
In 1998/9 there were approximately 120,000 students pursuing higher education in Hong Kong.
Languages :
Chinese and English are the official languages in Hong Kong. Cantonese is the most widely spoken Chinese dialect, although Mandarin, Shanghainese, and other Chinese dialects are also used. English is widely used in most official occasions.
Religions :
Buddhist, Confucian and Taoist, with Christian and Muslim minorities, but there are also places of worship for most other religious groups.
Area :
The total area of Hong Kong is 1092 square km out of which 1042 square km is land and 50 square km is water.
Commerce :
Hong Kong has a free market economy highly dependant on international trade.
Type of Government :
Since July 1,1997 Hong Kong is a special administrative region of China. China’s National People’s Congress is Hong Kong’s mini-constitution. The legal system is based on the English Common Law. The head of Government is Chief Executive Tung Chee-Hwa.
