 ISRAEL

Programs designed for foreigners

The universities offer many programs designed for overseas students who are not fluent in Hebrew. These courses are provided mostly in English, but there are also a few institutions that operate in French.
The overseas student’s first step is to contact the selected university where he/she can get all the application procedure information and the specific admission requirements.
Almost all universities have a Departement for Overseas Students, which provides specialized services such as orientation, assistance with housing, and counselling for international students.

Programs
The programs designed for overseas students in Israel are developed by the Committee for Overseas Students (under the jurisdiction of the Council for Higher Education) in conjunction with the higher education institutions. There are approximately 30 long-term programs of one semester or one year and 70 summer school programs lasting between three to six weeks.

5 types of programs are implemented for overseas students:

  1. One-semester or One-year programs
They are the most attended courses by overseas students. They were created to provide visiting students at undergraduate level with a diversified academic experience at the Israeli universities, while earning credits that might be transferred to their home institution.
The language of instruction in almost all institutions is English, however many of them offer programs in French (ie: Hebrew University of Jerusalem).
The courses taught within this program vary from institution to institution, except for the intensive Hebrew courses called ULPAN, which are compulsory in all institutions.

  2. Programs towards an M.A or a Doctorate in English
Overseas students who hold a B.A. and wish to spend one semester or more in an Israeli university may enroll in graduate programs taught in the English language. Generally speaking, the credits earned there might be transferred to their home institutions and might be recognized by the North American and the European universities. It’s recommended that the student make all the enquiries at his home institution prior to his application.

  3. Programs towards regular degree studies leading to a B.A., M.A. or PhD in Hebrew
Overseas students with a good knowledge of Hebrew may apply directly for regular degree studies in the universities, the same way as Israeli students. They must hold an equivalent qualification to the Bagrut (Israeli matriculation certificate) and meet the other admission requirements specific to each institution and each degree.
Only Israeli citizens, however, are admitted to programs in medicine, dentistry, veterinary, physiotherapy, and communication disorders studies.

  4. Summer School Programs
They are held between June and August and offer a wide variety of courses according to each university : intensive courses in Hebrew, archeology, Jewish studies, literature, international relations and more.

  5. Preparatory Programs

Mechina : this is a one-year program designed for overseas students with a High School Certificate, who wish to continue their higher education studies in Israel. In this program, students have intensive courses in Hebrew and English, mathematics, Jewish studies and history, social sciences. It starts in June.

Maof : a one-year program designed for B.A. graduates wishing to prepare an M.A. degree in Israel. This program provides Hebrew language courses, as well as Jewish studies and history. It starts in June.
