European citizens do not need a visa.
All other citizens need to apply for a visa "Shengen" at the Italian embassy or consulate at least one month in advance.
Foreign students from outside the European Union need to present their request for registration to an Italian diplomatic or consular staff between April and June, except if the Ministry of the univsersity has otherwise indicated. This request must also be presented with the following authentic documents:
- qualification awarded for the secondary education or a certificate of attendance for the last year of higher education, that are legally translated;
- a health insurance that covers medical attention and hospitalization except for EU citizens;
- a passport containing the entrance visa for study purposes;
- an authenticated copy of the residence permit (for non EU citizens)
- participation in an Italian language qualification course to be awarded by the University of Rome or the University for foreigners in Perouse or Siena.
- 2 authenticated photos

The applications are transmitted by the diplomatic delegation to the universities. During the 8 days following the entrance into Italy, the students must go to the local police (Questra) to obtain their residence permit for the "purpose of studying."
