THE CROSSROADS BETWEEN EAST AND WEST
Thanks
to its strategic geographical position, its rich history marked
by a succession of several ancient civilizations and its modern
and bubbly way of life, Lebanon has always been considered the
meeting point of the eastern and the western worlds. Once known
as the Switzerland of the Middle-East, with regard to its high
quality of life and its beautiful nature where mountains and beaches
peek on each other, Lebanon took a hard blow during the 15-year
civil war.
Today, Lebanon is back on its feet again, where extensive reconstruction
and wide ranging development programs are undertaken to make it
regain its position as the economical and the cultural leader
of the whole region.
Lebanon packs a lot into its small borders : Phoenician ancient
cities, Roman remnants, Islamic architecture. It also has fabulous
outdoor activity opportunities : ski resorts, trekking, water-skiing,
windsurfing, sailing.
The Lebanese educational system is open and free and reputed for
its superior quality. Students coming from abroad have the choice
between several educational systems : Anglo-Saxon, French
or Lebanese and between three languages of instruction: English,
French or Arabic. The old prestigious universities (American University
of Beirut ; Université Saint-Joseph) as well as the
long welcome tradition of Beirut makes it the intellectual and
academic capital of the Middle-East.
