 NETHERLANDS

Degrees and diplomas

The degrees given by Dutch schools:

• Professional schools (h.b.o).
These prepare students for professional careers. Internships (working in a business or institution) are an important part of the program. Practical experience is supplemented by the theoretical studies needed for each profession. The program most often lasts four years. At the end of four years, graduates are entitled to the title of baccalaureus (bc.) or in engineering and agriculture, ingenieur (ing.). The maximum length a student can be enrolled is six years, only as the first phase of higher education. It is also possible to attend certain of these programs part time (day or evening). Students of professional schools can enter a university after the first year of studies in a professional school.

• Universities (W.O)
University programs normally last four years, with a maximum of six years, as in the professional schools. The studies end with the presentation of a thesis, and the degree conferred is doctorandus (drs), ingenieur (ir) for engineers, or meester (mr) for law. It is also possible to attend certain of these programs part time either in the day or evening. In some cases, the program lasts longer. It takes a minimum of five years in dentistry or philosophy, and six years for medicine, pharmacy, or veterinarian medicine. Finally, to become a professor in any given subject, it is always necessary to add an additional year.

• The Open University
The Open University offers a selection of distance learning courses, lasting from 3 to 12 months, depending on the subject matter and the level. You can easily take an isolated course or two. But it is also possible to pursue a complete professional or university program by accumulating the courses required. It offers courses in law, social sciences, arts subjects, economics, management and administrative science, engineering sciences and natural sciences. The department of student relations can furnish information on all the offerings of the Open University.

• International Universities
15 institutes for International Education offer postgraduate courses in a wide range of fields. All concuded in English; they have been designed with foreign students in mind. For admission to most of the courses a degree is required as well as several years of practical work experience.
