Health insurance
Students staying in Norway for longer than one year are automatically
attached to the national health and social security at the time
of the registration at the university.
Students staying in Norway for between three and twelve months
must fill out a special form and send it to the social security
office in the municipality they will be living in.
Students staying in Norway for less than three months must have
a health coverage from their country.
Students from the European Economic Area (EEA) must be covered
by a social security of their country of origin. They must supply
an E111 or E128 form, and they will benefit from Norwegian health
coverage.
For students needing to register with the Norwegian social security,
coverage is free and it covers all consultations and hospital
fees. The following fees are not covered:
- A health problem that occurred during a trip outside of Norway
- Dental care
- Pharmaceutical expenses
- Treatments for a disease contracted before having arrived
into Norway
- Repatriation fees for a student who needs to return home for
health reasons.
For students of the EU and EEA, you must always have an E111
form. In any case a valid E111 form is one requirement to get
a residence permit.
For students outside the EU and EEA who are insured from their
country of origin, it is advised to get information in your country
before leaving to know exactly your position in relation to the
Norwegian social security plan.
Finally, the large Norwegian universities all have a health center
that offers free health care to registered students.
