Portugal has been a member of the Schengen Agreement since 1995, so European citizens do not need visas, as well as citizens of some other countries. Australian citizens do need visas to enter the country.

• Tourist visa–Schengen Visa type C
Duration of stay: less than 90 days
Limitations: Does not include the right to work
Documents needed: Valid passport, letter of invitation or hotel reservation, proof of sufficient financial resources, health insurance
Cost of visa: 4,500-9,000 Escudo (24 us $ - 48 us $)
How long to obtain: a few days to several weeks
The Schengen type D visas pertain to stays longer than 3 months :

• "Student" visa
Duration of stay: more than 3 months
Documents needed: Letter of admittance from a university, proof of financial resources, medical insurance
Limitations: Does not include the right to work

How long to obtain: a few days to several weeks

• Work visa
Duration of stay: more than 3 months
Documents needed: work permit or letter from your employer including the duration of the job
