Degrees/Diplomas

Receiving the secondary education diploma allows to accede to universities and other higher education establishments .
The duration and the level of the programs and classes are accounted for by a system of points: one year of studies amounts to 40 weeks and is equivalent to 40 points (credits). Each week consists of 40 hours of classes.

Higher education is made up of four types of diplomas as follows:

Högskoleexamen (Diploma)
This university diploma is awarded after the acquisition of 80 points, which is 2 years.

Kandidatexamen (Bachelor’s degree)
This diploma is for arts, sciences and social science degrees. It requires between 120 and 160 points, which is either 3 or 4 years. Personal work is included in the course and represents a minimum of 10 points.

Magisterexamen (Master’s degree)
This degree is awarded in arts, sciences and social sciences and requires 160 points (4 years) in which a minimum of 20 points are awarded for personal research.

Yrkesexamen (Professional diplomas)
This study scheme takes between 1 and 6 years (40 to 220 points) depending on the specialty chosen: law, art, engineering, medicine, agriculture (there are 51 subjects).

At the third cycle of higher education other diplomas are awarded. It is accessible to all candidates after at least three years of studies.

Licentiatexamen
This is awarded 2 years after a Magisterexamen. This is a research degree.

Doktorsexamen
This is awarded after the publication of a thesis generally at the end of 4 years.
