 TAIWAN

Organization

Higher education is offered by universities, colleges and "junior colleges", in public and private establishments. There are also open universities. An institute qualifies as a university if it has more than three colleges or faculties.

Since 1999 the public universities are no longer entirely financed by the state, therefore they themselves must collect funds: which counts for 20% of their budget. The public universities are becoming increasingly autonomous.

Private education is financed by the tuition fees.

Accreditation

Taiwanese higher education is accredited by the Ministry of Education.

University calendar

2 semesters: September/January

February/June

Summer sessions are not common.
