Institution's conditions
British students are obliged to attend 20 hours of courses
per week, during which a significant part is dedicated to
personal research. Courses are divided into three categories:
lectures, seminars and tutorials. Tutorials are smaller
class groups (5-6 students) intended for practical work.
The system of learning is one that is mainly a responsibility
of the student. This means that the course load is not big
in the classroom, and therefore the students are required
to do a great deal of work on their own using the libraries
and resource centers, that are generally very well documented
and organized.
Professors demand and expect to be respected for their
status, meaning it is advised to use their title (Doctor
or professor). It establishes a distance between
the student and his/her professor, but it does not mean
that they are not willing to listen to problems and help
their students in any way they can.
The students are also invited by the university to do evaluations
on their professors and courses towards the end of each
semester. This enables the university to maintain and satisfy
the interests of the students, as well as maintain a good
relationship between administration and students.
The evaluation of a students' course work is rarely based
solely on final exams. Students are more likely to be evaluated
throughout the academic year, through exams, homework, essays
etc...
